What is now Humacao belonged to the region of Jumaca, which was led by chief Jumacao (also known as Macao). Jumacao is believed to be the first Taíno chief to learn to read and write Spanish, as records show he wrote to Charles I, king of Spain at the time, to complain about the Puerto Rico governor. During the early 16th century, the region was populated by cattle ranchers. In 1722, the first official settlement was constituted in the area.
Besides the resort's beaches, Humacao has other popular beaches, such as Punta Santiago, Buena Vista, Punta Candelero and El Morrillo, as well as rivers and creeks. The El Yunque National Forest in Río Grande, Laguna Grande Bioluminescent Bay and Cabezas Nature Reserve in Fajardo, and islands of Culebra and Vieques are easily accessible from Palmas Del Mar.
