Hello friends,
In 2010, I started IRW as a real estate law practice. Shortly after, the death of two close relatives forced me to go through probate in Puerto Rico. The arduous experience, in particular its length (years), effects on familial relationships, and economic impact was a great awakening for me.
I dove into every detail of the probate process, studying inheritance law, asset protection, and tax planning, reading case law, taking seminars on every related subject, and figuring out how to jump through hoops. I learned the value of using planning tools to avoid a drawn-out, expensive and stressful probate process.
To help others navigate through this complex process, I reorganized my firm based on a three-pronged approach:
1. Estate Planning: what happens to our assets when we die, how to protect and care for the people we love.
2. Asset Protection: how to protect our wealth from third parties.
3. Tax Planning: how to mitigate the impact of taxes
Because of the tax implications of estate planning, IRW began assisting clients on a number of tax matters. When new tax incentives laws were enacted in 2012, our practice expanded to help clients apply for tax incentives under Acts 20/22/14. Our client base grew to include individuals and companies wishing to relocate to the island to engage in business, become bona fide residents of Puerto Rico and support the local economy.
As we worked with these clients, we became aware of the challenges they faced when relocating to the island—the exhausting process of moving, finding a home, dealing with government agencies, registering their businesses, obtaining IDs and permits, finding schools and doctors, and the list went on and on.
In 2017, we decided to expand our services to facilitate our clients’ transition to Puerto Rico by providing relocation, real estate, and concierge services through a new division, IRW Concierge. Then the Puerto Rico Incentives Code of 2019, or Act 60, prompted our firm to evolve further in order to serve a growing clientele.
And so we became a one-stop-shop for individuals, families, and businesses relocating to Puerto Rico.
Yes, we're not the only firm in town to offer these services, but we're the most approachable, friendliest, and most trustworthy. No other firm on the island provides the level of personal service and care that we give our clients. They truly become cherished members of the IRW family.
We're also unique in that we follow through with compliance. Not only do we help clients choose planning structures that work for them and draft legal documents, but we also assist them with the maintenance of these structures and all compliance requirements.
As a result, we have become our clients’ go-to advisors for important life decisions and the keepers of important documents and data. And we couldn't be more honored.
